Assad travels to Tehran on rare visit to his main regional ally

Tehran, Apr 8 (EFE).- Syria’s president Bashar Al-Assad on Sunday paid a brief unannounced visit to Tehran where he met his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Assad arrived in the Iranian capital Sunday morning and returned to Damascus after meeting with Iranian leaders, a post on Khamenei’s Twitter said.

The visit was not announced in advance and was only reported after the Syrian president left Iran, his main regional ally, which has provided him with military, economic, and political aid.

“The Syrian ppl’s & govt’s resistance & victory in an international war has increased #Syria’s credibility,” the statement said.

Assad last visited Iran in February 2019 on an unannounced trip to meet Khamenei and then-President Hassan Rouhani.

During that visit, the Syrian president received aid to rebuild his country after years of war. EFE
