Prague, Dec 21 (EFE).- At least 10 people were killed and around 25 were injured in a shooting at a university in Prague on Thursday, Czech emergency services said.

Police confirmed that the shooter has been “eliminated” and that the “entire building” at the Faculty of Arts of Charles University in the center of the Czech capital was being evacuated.

In a post on Twitter, Prague’s Medical Rescue Services said the shooting had left “11 dead, including the attacker, 9 seriously injured, 5-6 moderately seriously injured, up to 10 slightly injured.”

The medical service warned that the casualty figures “may still change.”

Radio Prague International reported that the shooting occurred at around 3pm at the university’s Faculty of Arts, on Jan Palach Square.

Interior minister Vít Rakušan told local television that there “there is no imminent danger” to the public.

In a statement on Twitter, Czech President Petr Pavel said he was “shocked by the events” and expressed his “deep regret and sincere condolences to the families and relatives of the victims of the shooting.”

Students at the faculty posted images on social media of how they had barricaded themselves inside classrooms and inside the university library before authorities had started evacuating the premises.

The area has been cordoned off while police carry out their investigation. EFE
