At least 1 dead, 4 missing after China hotel collapses

Shanghai, China, Jul 13 (EFE).- At least one person died and four others were missing Tuesday after a hotel collapsed in Suzhou, eastern China, according to state press.

Rescue teams rescued 14 people following the Monday incident as they continued their search, according to state television CCTV.

The collapse occurred after 3.30 p.m. local time (07.30 GMT), when, according to news portal Sina, the hotel’s auxiliary building collapsed.

More than 600 troops from both Suzhou – the second most populous city in the eastern province of Jiangsu – and nearby towns are participating in rescue efforts, in which heavy machinery cannot be used due to the risk of a new collapse.

The causes of the incident are currently unknown, and authorities have announced the opening of an investigation to clarify them. EFE
