At least 1 dead, others injured in large Haiti protests

Port-au-Prince, Feb 14 (efe-epa).- At least one man died Sunday and another was shot during a large protest in the Haitian capital called to demand the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse.

Security forces were stationed at Delmas 60 area, where they responded with live fire and tear gas to protesters who threw stones and a truck tire at the officers.

A man was wounded by a bullet, while an officer suffered impact to the face.

There was also a confrontation between armed civilians that left one dead. A man’s body was consumed by flames along with his motorcycle in Delmas 90, according to EFE at the scene.

Once again, the press was attacked by the police, who fired on a group of reporters taking photos of firefighters putting out a vehicle fire, at which time there were no protesters nearby.

Likewise, near the Karibe hotel there were shots fired, which stopped when the officers realized that they were members of the national and international press.

Thousands of Haitians took to the streets of Port-au-Prince Sunday to demand the resignation of Moïse.

The demonstration took place a week after Feb. 7, the date on which the opposition considers that his term ended, although the president claims he has a year left in office.

That day, Moïse claimed that the opposition was preparing a coup d’état and announced that the authorities had made more than 20 arrests, including a judge from the Court of Cassation, the highest judicial body in the country, which gave way to a deep institutional crisis.

The opposition then appointed another Court of Cassation judge, Joseph Mécène Jean Louis, as “interim president.”

Since last Sunday, there have been daily protests in Port-au-Prince, although with a much smaller influx of protesters than this Sunday. EFE-EPA
