Dhaka, Dec 19 (efe-epa).- At least 12 people were killed and three injured on Saturday after a train hit a passenger bus at a level crossing in the Jaipurhat district in northern Bangladesh.
The accident took place around 6.45 am when a train on its way to the northern city of Rajshahi rammed into a bus at a crossing in the Puranapoil area of the district, Jaipurhat’s additional police superintendent Sazzad Hossain told EFE.
“Ten people died on the spot. We sent five injured people to the hospital, two of them died there,” he said.
According to Hossain, the accident occurred because “there was no railway staff at the crossing at that time. The train dragged the bus for nearly one kilometer.”
The accident also snapped the entire railway link between the northern region and the rest of the country for hours.
Accidents at railway crossings are common in Bangladesh as many of these intersections often remained unguarded.
Between January 1 and December 22, 2019, 239 people were killed and 470 were injured in 217 level crossing accidents, according to the Accident Research Institute at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.EFE-EPA
