Man shoots himself after crashing car into US Capitol barricade

Washington, Aug 14 (EFE).- A man committed suicide after ramming his car into a barricade outside the United States Capitol building in Washington DC, authorities said on Sunday.

A statement from the Capitol Police said the incident took place after 4.00 am (8.00 GMT) when the car hit a barricade installed on East Capitol Street, a few meters from the home of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The driver then got out of the vehicle and fired several shots into the air before shooting himself when police officers arrived at the scene.

An investigation into the incident has been launched.

On January 6, 2021, the US Capitol was subjected to a violent assault when a mob of then-president Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the building to try to prevent the certification of the victory of Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 elections. EFE
