At least 2 killed in fresh anti-coup protests in Sudan

Khartoum, Oct 30 (EFE).- At least two people have been killed and several others injured by gunshots fired by security forces, the Committee of Sudan Doctors said, as thousands of people on Saturday took to the streets of Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, to protest a military coup which overthrew the civilian government.

“The militias of the coup military council are now firing bullets at protesters in Um Durman and other areas of the capital,” the committee said in a statement on their Facebook account.

“As a result, two martyrs died and there are several wounded,” it added.

The protesters are calling for the civilian government to be reestablished following Monday’s coup led by general Abdul-Fattah al-Burhan.

Solidarity demonstrations were held in several world capitals, such as Washington, Madrid and Paris.

The United States as well as the United Nations and the European Union have called on the military and police to avoid using violence against the protesters.

The UN mission to Sudan has also called on the demonstrators to protest peacefully.

The latest fatalities add the at least 11 people who have been killed and 100 injured in clashes between protesters and security forces since the coup, opposition organizations and International Amnesty said.

Following the ouster of dictator Omar al-Bashir in 2019, Sudan was ruled by a transitional government in which the military and the civilian opposition shared power.

Tensions started to escalate after an attempted coup last month. Weeks-long demonstrations ensued, with protesters demanding an exclusively civilian transitional government.

Hamdok said that after the failed Sept. 21 coup it was necessary to reform the military and security agencies, accusing “remnants” of the al-Bashir regime of orchestrating the attempted putsch.

The deposed Sudanese Prime Minister, Abdullah Hamdok, was arrested on Monday, although he was released a day later and is being held his residence. EFE
