At least 2 missing, 3 injured as sinkhole swallows cars in Guatemala

Guatemala City, Sep 25 (EFE).- At least two people are missing and three others were injured in Guatemala after a sinkhole opened up on a street south of the capital.

Three injured people fell into the hole in their vehicle and were rescued hours later by emergency services, as confirmed by various sources.

Two missing people – reportedly a woman and her teenage daughter – were supposedly traveling in another car that also fell in, their relatives told journalists.

The road’s collapse, caused by heavy rains, took place in the municipality of Villa Nueva, in the department of Guatemala, 20 kilometers south of the capital.

Relief corps and members of the Guatemalan army entered the sinkhole with a special team in search of the two missing persons, without success so far, although they did pull a vehicle out.

At least 44 people have died due to effects of the rainy season (from May to October) in Guatemala this year, according to the National Coordination for Disaster Reduction. EFE
