At least 23 dead after building collapses in Egypt

Cairo, Mar 28 (efe-epa).- At least 23 people have been killed after a residential building collapsed in Cairo, the Egyptian civil defense service confirmed on Sunday.

The service said in a statement that 25 others were wounded in the collapse of the 10-story building that took place early Saturday in the district of Gesr al-Suez in eastern Cairo.

The death toll increased after the service managed to recover five more bodies from under the rubble.

Rescue teams continue searching in the rubble of the building for more victims, the statement added.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known.

In Egypt, residential buildings collapse frequently, mainly because of poor maintenance and violations of building regulations.EFE-EPA
