At least 23 dead after storms, tornado hits Mississippi

New York, Mar 25 (EFE).- At least 23 people were killed and dozens injured by powerful storms and a tornado that rolled through areas of Mississippi, the state governor said Saturday.

The storms left a trail of destruction in their path through rural areas of the southern state, causing blackouts and extensive damage to infrastructure on Friday, US media reported.

“At least twenty three Mississippians were killed by last night’s violent tornados. We know that many more are injured. Search and rescue teams are still active,” Mississippi governor Tate Reeves said in a tweet.

“The loss will be felt in these towns forever. Please pray for God’s hand to be over all who lost family and friends.”

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said on Twitter that the casualty toll was likely to change but confirmed that dozens were injured and at least four people were missing.

The storms and tornado hit the northern part of Mississippi, affecting areas around Rolling Fork and Silver Lake, among others.

An estimated 100,000 households in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee were without power on Saturday morning, according to the tracking site Power Outage. EFE
