At least 4 die in northwest Turkey floods

Istanbul, Aug 12 (EFE).- Heavy rain and floods hitting the northwest of Turkey by the Black Sea since Wednesday have resulted in the deaths of at least four people, as authorities continue to search for one missing person.

The four fatalities were recorded in the Kastamonu province, where some localities registered over 200 litres per square meter falling over the course of 24 hours, according to the state-owned Anadolu Agency.

In the adjacent province of Bartin, Turkish rescue teams were searching for one person who is unaccounted for.

The heavy rains have destroyed homes, highways, and two major bridges in Kastamonu and Bartin, leaving hundreds of people isolated in their towns across the area.

Muhterem Ince, the interior vice minister, said that 634 people have been evacuated from Kastamonu, Bartin, and Sinop, which was also affected by the rains.

Over 100 litres per square meter of rain is expected to fall throughout the afternoon in the area. EFE
