Magnussen takes pole for Brazil Grand Prix sprint

Sports Desk, Nov 11 (EFE).- Denmark’s Kevin Magnussen (Haas) won pole position Friday for the first time in his Formula One career, grabbing P1 for the qualifying sprint at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The winner of Saturday’s sprint will earn 3 points in the driver standings, with second place good for 2 points and third for a single point. More importantly, the sprint result determines the start order for Sunday’s main event.

Magnussen had set the fastest lap two minutes into Q3 at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo when Briton George Russell (Mercedes) experienced a lockup that left his car on the gravel and brought out a red flag.

It was raining by the time the session resumed and no one was able to improve on the 30-year-old Dane’s time. Reigning two-time champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) finished second.

The Dutchman was followed by Russell and fellow Briton Lando Norris (McLaren), while Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) was the fifth-fastest.

The Alpine duo of Frenchman Esteban Ocon and Spain’s Fernando Alonso were sixth and seventh, respectively.

British seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Mexican driver Sergio “Checo” Perez (Red Bull) and Monaco’s Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) completed the top 10.

Though Verstappen has already secured the driver’s championship, the battle for second continues between Perez (280 points) and Leclerc (275).

Ferrari and Mercedes are separated by 40 points in the quest to finish second behind Red Bull in the constructor’s championship.
