At least 5 dead, 37 injured in tunnel fire in South Korea

Seoul, Dec 29 (EFE).- At least five people died and 37 others suffered injuries Thursday as a fire broke out in a tunnel along an expressway in Gwacheon, to the south of Seoul, South Korean fire service reported.

The fire started at 1.49 pm local time at an expressway connecting the port city of Incheon to the city of Seongnam, the authorities said.

According to preliminary investigations, the fire started due to the collision of a truck and a bus, resulting in flames and clouds of smoke.

Three people died, including the drivers of both the vehicles, while 37 others were wounded – three of them serious – due to smoke inhalation.

According to the authorities, the number of deaths could increase further.

The fire was brought under control at 3.18 pm, following the deployment of 94 fire trucks, 219 firefighters, and helicopters in the operation. EFE
