Atletico fall to last-place Levante

Sports Desk, Feb 16 (EFE).- The worst team in LaLiga came into Atletico Madrid’s stadium on Wednesday and defeated the reigning champions 1-0.

Though they doubled their win total for the season, Levante remain 10 points from safety with 14 games left. Atleti are fifth, level on points with Barcelona at 39, but trailing the Catalan club on goal difference.

The Colchoneros had 54 percent possession, yet they managed to put only one shot on target, compared with five for the visitors.

Levante were poised to take the lead in the 21st minute when a blunder by Jose Maria Gimenez resulted in a great chance for Jorge de Frutos and Jan Oblak had to come up with a big save.

Nine minutes into the second half, a pass from De Frutos found Gustavo Melero in the box and he beat Oblak for the 1-0.

Atletico’s Angel Correa put the ball in the net deep into stoppage time with a stupendous overhead kick, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul by Gimenez, who started Wednesday despite not having practiced with the squad for six days after a positive Covid-19 test. EFE id/dr
