Death of Elizabeth II unites the world in sorrow

International Desk, Sep 8 (EFE).- Leaders around the world joined in expressing sorrow over the death Thursday of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history.

Reaction to the news that Elizabeth had died at the age of 96 evinced a rare moment of unity, with an outpouring of condolences and tributes.

“Queen Elizabeth II led always with grace, an unwavering commitment to duty, and the incomparable power of her example. She was a stateswoman of unmatched dignity and constancy who deepened the bedrock Alliance between the United Kingdom and the United States,” President Joe Biden said.

“She helped make our relationship special,” the president said in a statement, adding that he ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at federal installations.

The prime minister of Ireland conveyed his “deepest sympathy” to the royal family and the government of the United Kingdom on the loss of Queen Elizabeth II.

“The Queen’s reign was one of historic duration, immense consequence and a focus of respect and admiration around the world,” Micheal Martin said. “Her dedication to duty and public service were self-evident and her wisdom and experience truly unique.”

French President Emmanuel Macron said that Queen Elizabeth II “embodied the British nation’s continuity and unity for over 70 years,” describing her as “a friend of France, a kind-hearted queen who has left a lasting impression on her country and her century.”

Speaking for Germany, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called Queen Elizabeth II “a woman who shaped the century.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Elizabeth II will be remembered “as a stalwart of our times.”

“She provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people. She personified dignity and decency in public life. Pained by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and people of UK in this sad hour,” he said.

Spain’s King Felipe VI said that the queen’s sense of duty and lifetime of service “set an example for all of us and will remain as a solid and valuable legacy for future generations.”

“Queen Letizia and I send Your Majesty and the whole Family our love and prayers. You are all in our hearts and thoughts. We will miss Her dearly,” the monarch said in a message to Elizabeth’s eldest son and successor, King Charles III.

Elizabeth II “has represented the UK and the Commonwealth with fairness, wisdom, respect for institutions and democracy,” Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said.

Expressions of sympathy and respect also came from Ukraine and Russia, currently at war with each other.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy extended “sincere condolences to the Royal Family, the entire United Kingdom and the Commonwealth” over the “irreparable loss.”

Russia’s Vladimir Putin said that Queen Elizabeth II “rightfully enjoyed the love and respect of her subjects, as well as authority on the world stage.”

“I wish you courage and resilience in the face of this difficult, irreparable loss,” he said in a telegram to Charles III. “May I ask you to pass on sincere condolences and support to members of the royal family and the entire people of Great Britain.”

Senior officials of the European Union also offered solidarity.

“Our thoughts are with the royal family and all those who mourn Queen Elizabeth II in the UK and worldwide,” European Council President Charles Michel said on Twitter.

“Once called Elizabeth the Steadfast, she never failed to show us the importance of lasting values in a modern world with her service and commitment,” he wrote.
