At least five killed in flood in China’s Sichuan province

Beijing, Aug 9 (EFE).- At least five people drowned on Wednesday due to a sudden increase in the water flow of a river in Ya’an region in the central Chinese province of Sichuan, state media reported.

The incident occurred in Yucheng district at around 10 am when a group of tourists were taking photos at a popular local site, state-run CCTV reported.

More than ten people were swept away by a sudden tide of water.

At least five people are confirmed dead and four have been rescued, local authorities said.

The exact circumstances of the accident are being investigated while a search and rescue operation involving the local government and the police is underway, according to local media reports.

Videos recorded by eyewitnesses show people crying for help during the chaotic incident.

Local authorities believe the flooding was caused by the overflowing of the river, which breached containment structures. EFE
