At least one dead, 20 injured in Peru bus crash

Lima, Dec 25 (EFE).- At least one person died, and ten suffered injuries on Saturday when the bus they were traveling in fell off a bridge and crashed into a dry river bed in Peru, authorities said.

Peru’s National Institute of Civil Defense said the bus fell from a height of about 16 feet as it passed through the municipality of Jayanca, in the northern region of n the north coast of the South American country.

The coach carried workers from an agro-industrial company.

Firefighters and police personnel rushed to the spot to rescue the accident survivors.

Police said they were investigating the cause of the bus crash.

Police took the injured people to the Jayanca health center and the Belén Hospital.

Passenger bus and other road accidents are common in Peru, mostly due to reckless driving, poor road and vehicle conditions, and rugged geographical terrain.

Every year around 3,000 people die on its roads in traffic accidents, figures from the National Road Safety Council show. EFE
