Atletico Madrid acquire Daniel Wass from Valencia

Sports Desk, Jan 27 (EFE).- Atletico Madrid announced Thursday the signing of midfielder Daniel Wass, acquired from fellow LaLiga club Valencia for 2.7 million euros ($3 million).

The 32-year-old Danish international inked an 18-month contract with the Colchoneros.

Though nominally a midfield player, Wass also has back-line experience and Atletico sees him as a replacement for defender Kieran Trippier, who left for Newcastle United earlier this month.

“His ability to play in defense and midfield and to make a difference on both ends of the pitch makes him a valuable addition to (coach Diego) Simeone’s side,” the club said in a statement.

Spotted Thursday by Spanish media around the Atletico offices at the Wanda Metropolitano, Wass has passed his medical and is ready to begin training with the Colchoneros.

Capped 41 times for Denmark, Wass has appeared in 224 LaLiga matches and 32 Copa del Rey ties for Celta Vigo (2015-2018) and Valencia.

“After 136 games, 14 goals and 20 assists (at Celta), the Dane was signed by Valencia in 2018. His versatility has also allowed him to shine at Mestalla, where he has produced 15 goals and 20 assists in 152 matches,” Atletico said of its latest signing.

Wass helped Celta reach the Europa League semifinals and was part of the Valencia side that won the Copa del Rey in 2019 and Simeone will be hoping that the footballer-as-Swiss-army-knife can contribute to a mid-season renaissance for the defending LaLiga champions. EFE mam/dr
