Atletico Madrid go 3rd in LaLiga with 6-1 rout of Sevilla

Madrid, Mar 4 (EFE).- Diego Simeone’s men marked his record-breaking 613th match as coach of Atletico Madrid by hammering Sevilla 6-1 here Saturday to vault over Real Sociedad into the third spot in LaLiga.

With a brace each for Memphis Depay and Alvaro Morata and goals from Antoine Griezmann and Yannick Carrasco, Atleti embarrassed 16th-place Sevilla, who are just a point above the drop zone.

The Colchoneros have finished no lower than third in each of the last 10 seasons with El Cholo at the helm, winning the title in 2013-2014 and 2020-2021 and taking second place on two other occasions.

But the current campaign has been one of the toughest since Simeone joined the club and Atleti dropped out of the top three in the final match before the World Cup break.

While the side has shown steady improvement since the start of 2023, Saturday’s performance was their most dominant in a long time.

Depay, making his first start for Atletico since coming over from Barcelona in January, staked the hosts to a 2-0 lead with goals in the 23rd and 26th minutes.

Youssef En-Nesyri answered for Sevilla with a goal in the 39th minute and the teams went to the break with the match still in the balance.

Eight minutes into the second half, Griezmann made it 3-1 with his 150th goal for Atleti, and the 4-1 materialized in the 69th minute thanks to Carrasco.

Sevilla got a chance to get back into the game a few minutes later when Pape Gueye won a penalty, but Ivan Rakitic’s kick from the spot bounced off the post two minutes before Morata scored the fifth goal for the hosts.

The visitors went down to 10 men in the 80th minute with Gueye’s expulsion for a second yellow card and Morata completed his double in stoppage time. EFE id/dr
