Russia records 12,505 Covid-19 infections in one day, four-month peak

Moscow, Jun 11 (EFE).- Russia recorded 12,505 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours, 12.5% more than the day before, and 396 new deaths, according to official figures.

It is the highest number of daily infections detected in Russia since February 22.

Moscow is the city worst hit by the surge, with 5,853 cases in one day, rates not seen since mid-January.

The overall number of Covid-19 infections registered in Russia since the pandemic began amounts to 5,180,454, with a total 125,674 Covid-19 deaths.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin announced new hospitals will open in the next few days to attend to the ill, 10,000 of whom are currently hospitalized.

Sobyanin rejected new lockdown restrictions or forcing businesses to close.

The director of the Kommunarka Hospital in Moscow, Denis Protsenko, reported an increase of cases where Covid-19 treatments seem to not be as effective as they used to be in treating the disease.

The surge in Covid-19 infections comes as Saint Petersburg prepares to host seven Uefa Euro 2020 games, the first one on June 12 pitting the local national team against Belgium. EFE
