Israel’s Bennett seeks to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv

Jerusalem, Mar 6 (EFE).- Israel’s prime minister Naftali Bennett Sunday said he continued to offer his role as mediator between Russia and Ukraine after meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday.

“Even if the chances are not high, once we have an opening, access to all sides and the capacity, I think it is our moral duty to make all attempts,” he told his ministers at a weekly cabinet meeting.

Bennett’s meeting with Putin lasted three hours, his office said.

After his visit to Moscow, Bennett arrived in Germany to discuss the war in Ukraine with German chancellor Olaf Scholz in a bid to end hostilities between the two sides.

“The situation on the ground is not good, there is great human suffering and if things continue on the current trajectory, it will get worse,” Bennet warned.

Meanwhile on Sunday, the Israeli prime minister had a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelenskyy, the third in 24 hours.

Ukraine has openly supported the mediation of Israel, which maintains good relations with the two nations.

Bennett said Israel’s position is “measured and responsible” and it is one of the few countries in the world that currently has direct communication with both the Kremlin and Kyiv.

Israel and Russia together are carrying out airstrikes on pro-Iranian points in Syria, attacks that have been ongoing since the start of the war in Ukraine. EFE
