Australia approves Covid-19 booster dose for those 16 and up

Sydney, Australia, Jan 28 (EFE).- Australian authorities approved Friday the third Covid-19 vaccine dose for people over 15, in the midst of a race to inoculate the booster serum to its population and mitigate the impact of the omicron variant on the country’s health and economy.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australia’s pharmaceutical regulator, said in a statement that the provisional approval of Pfizer’s drug follows similar measures in the United States, Israel and the United Kingdom.

Australia, which has inoculated 93 percent of its population over 16 with two doses and is one of the countries with the highest vaccination rates, is accelerating the administration of the vaccine among the population 5 to 12, as well as the inoculation of booster doses.

Australia registered a new daily record of Covid-19 deaths Friday with 93, accumulating almost 3,500 deaths since the start of the pandemic, in addition to 38,320 infections.

The country has accumulated almost 1.9 million infections since the start of the pandemic, around 80% in the last two months. EFE
