‘The White Lotus,’ ‘Succession’ and ‘Ted Lasso’ share Emmys

Los Angeles, United States, Sep 13 (EFE).- They were the big favorites and there were no surprises: “Succession,” for drama; “Ted Lasso,” in comedy and “The White Lotus,” in the miniseries category, emerged as the Emmys’ great winners, with awards also going to “Squid Game.”

The South Korean series, which already made history this summer by becoming the first non-English production to achieve an Emmy nomination, could not be crowned best drama but collected awards for director Hwang Dong-Hyuk, and leading actor Lee Jung-Jae.

Despite the spread of the awards, delivered at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, United States, there was a title that stood out above the rest: the satirical and uncomfortable “The White Lotus,” with five awards.

This fiction series from HBO won the gala Monday as the best miniseries and added two awards for its creator, Mike White (best direction and screenplay), another for best supporting actor for Murray Barlett and a fifth for actress Jennifer Coolidge.

In addition, according to the count of the US Television Academy, which includes the technical categories delivered the previous days, “The White Lotus” is the undisputed winner of the 74th edition of the Emmys with 10 wins.

It came despite HBO premiering the series last summer without the hype and promotion of other titles.

With an ensemble cast, “The White Lotus” satirizes the most jarring aspects of class and race differences in the US, recreating a luxury hotel in Hawaii where the superficial problems of wealthy guests rule, and take precedence, to the harsh reality of many of its employees.

Such has been its reception, thanks to word of mouth and good reviews, that HBO has already confirmed that there will be a second installment set in Sicily, Italy, with a different cast and plot.

“Succession” met expectations and won the Emmy for best drama series. The production, also from HBO, came to the Emmys with high hopes after being the most nominated with 25 nominations that left it just seven behind the historical record of 2019 that “Game of Thrones” continues to set.

The family drama, which won in 2020, beat “Stranger Things,” “Euphoria” and “Squid Game” and repeated its success.

“Ted Lasso” also repeated its triumph, and for the second consecutive year, by confirming itself as the best comedy of the year.

The production, which has become the main claim of Apple TV +, the platform with which the popular technology company is trying to gain a foothold in the audiovisual industry business, also distributed awards for protagonist Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein, for best performance.

However, it seems the joy will be short-lived for Apple, because before the gala one of its supporting actresses, Hannah Waddingham, said on the red carpet that the series would conclude with its third season, still pending confirmation of its premiere date.

In the interpretive section, two names stood out: Zendaya and Lee Jung-Jae, who made history by winning the Emmy for best dramatic actress and actor, respectively, for their roles in “Euphoria” and “Squid Game.”

Zendaya, at 26, became the youngest actress to win the Acting Emmy twice while Lee Jung-Jae was crowned the first actor to win the awards with a role played in a non-English language.

Jung-Jae, who until a year ago was unknown outside South Korea, prevailed over other more popular names such as Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) and Jeremy Strong (“Succession.”) EFE
