Ukraine shoots down 21 kamikaze drones in new night of Russian attacks

Kyiv, May 3 (EFE).- Russia attacked Ukraine overnight with around 26 Iran-made kamikaze drones, 21 of which were shot down by anti-aircraft defenses, the Ukrainian Air Force reported Wednesday.

The drones were launched from Russia’s Bryansk region off northeastern Ukraine and from the Sea of Azov in the southeast, it said on Telegram.

Some of these Iranian Shahed 136/131 drones were headed for the capital, Kyiv, where anti-aircraft sirens were activated around midnight and the Ukrainian army destroyed all unmanned aerial vehicles that entered its airspace.

“The tactics of the enemy remain usual and unchanged – with the onset of darkness, the terrorist country launched its barrage of ammunition from various directions,” the head of the Kyiv Military Administration, Sergii Popko, said on Telegram.

“According to preliminary information, all enemy targets were identified and shot down in the airspace around the capital.”

With the help of anti-aircraft defense systems received from its Western allies, Ukraine has now shot down most of the kamikaze drones with which Russia destroyed numerous Ukrainian energy infrastructure in the autumn and winter.

According to some analysts, Russia continues to launch these low-cost drones to force Ukraine to spend much more expensive missiles and other types of anti-aircraft munitions.

The interceptions of these drones could also help Russia locate the defensive systems used by Ukraine. EFE
