Nato allies commit to provide Ukraine with long range systems
Brussels, Jun 15 (EFE).- Nato allies are committed in their support to Ukraine and will continue to provide Kyiv with military equipment including heavy weapons and long range systems, Nato’s secretary general said Wednesday.
“Allies are committed to continue providing the military equipment that Ukraine needs to prevail, including heavy weapons and long range systems,” Jens Stoltenberg said in a press conference ahead of a meeting of Nato defense ministers in Brussels.
The meeting will include delegates from Ukraine, Georgia, Sweden, Finland, and the European Union.
“This will be an opportunity for Defense Minister Reznikov to update us on what Ukraine urgently needs, and for Nato Allies to make new announcements of support to Ukraine,” Stoltenberg said.
The Nato chief said that allies will also discuss how to step up “practical” support for other partners “at risk” including Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia.
“In this more dangerous world, we need to make Nato stronger, and further support our partners,” he said, referring to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The secretary general also talked about Finland and Sweden’s applications to become members of the alliance, calling them “historic” moves.
Stoltenberg said the Nato summit in Madrid at the end of June would focus on “longer term” support to Ukraine.
“I expect that at the summit, Nato allies will agree a comprehensive assistance package for Ukraine,” he said, adding that it would “help Ukraine for the longer-term, to transition from Soviet-era to modern Nato equipment, and to improve interoperability with Nato”.
