La película, dirigida por Julian Schnabel, se basa en la autobiografía homónima del destacado escritor cubano Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990). Nacido en una humilde familia, de una zona rural de Cuba, Arenas fue parte de la revolución castrista en su juventud. Sin embargo, su labor literaria y su posterior disidencia al régimen motivaron una férrea persecución del gobierno. Su abierta homosexualidad le significó ser encarcelado por dos años y obligado a renegar de su identidad sexual. Tras ser enviado a una granja de rehabilitación, Arenas recuperó su libertad, en 1976. El escritor pudo abandonar la isla durante el éxodo del Mariel, cuando unas 125.000 personas salieron de la isla, en 1980.
En Estados Unidos, si bien enseñó en la Universidad de Florida y fue nombrado profesor visitante en la Universidad de Nueva York, Arenas sufrió el aislamiento de los intelectuales a favor de la revolución cubana. Fiel a la literatura, continuó su compromiso con la poesía y la narrativa, no obstante, agobiado por la fatalidad y enfermo de SIDA, el escritor se quitó la vida a fines de 1990. El mundo alucinante (1969), un notable trabajo satírico sobre la vida de fraile dominico Servando Teresa de Mier (1765-1827), le valió la censura del régimen y un lugar en las letras hispanoamericanas.
El actor español Javier Bardem realiza una sorprendente interpretación de Arenas en este film dirigido a un público con criterio formado. La trama entremezcla memorias, sueños, erotismo, deseos y la pesadilla de sufrir el acoso de un régimen intolerante a la diversidad ideológica y sexual. El reparto incluye la participación de distinguidos actores secundarios como Johnny Depp (Bon Bon/Lugarteniente Víctor), Sean Penn (Cuco Sánchez), Olivier Martínez (Lázaro Gómez Carilles) o un joven Diego Luna (Carlos).
El mayor logro de Schnabel radica en su capacidad para transmitir visualmente la belleza poética de la obra de Arenas en medio de un mundo agreste. En este contexto, resulta estremecedora la vocación de este artista por difundir su trabajo intelectual esquivando la censura.

The film, directed by Julian Schnabel, is based on the autobiography of the famous exiled Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990). Born in a humble family, from a rural area in Cuba, Arenas was part of Castro’s revolution as a youth. However, his literary work and subsequent dissidence to the regime triggered a fierce government persecution. Due to his open homosexuality, he was imprisoned for two years and forced to renounce his sexual identity. After sent to a rehabilitation farm, Arenas regained his freedom, in 1976. The writer was able to leave the island during the Mariel exodus, when approximately 125,000 people left the island, in 1980.
In the United States, although he taught at the University of Florida and was appointed as visiting professor at the University of New York, Arenas suffered the isolation from the intellectuals in favor of the Cuban revolution. During this time, he continued his commitment to poetry and narrative. However, overwhelmed by fate and suffering from AIDS, the writer committed suicide, in 1990. Hallucinations (1969), a remarkable satirical novel about the Dominican friar Servando Teresa de Mier (1765-1827), was censored by the regime and gave him renown in Spanish American literature.
The Spanish actor Javier Bardem gives an outstanding performance, interpreting Arenas in this film intended for mature audiences. The plot intertwines memories, dreams, eroticism, desire and the nightmare of suffering the harassment of a regime bigoted about ideological and sexual diversity. The cast includes distinguished secondary actors such as Johnny Depp (Bon Bon / Lieutenant Víctor), Sean Penn (Cuco Sánchez), Olivier Martínez (Lázaro Gomez Carilles) or a young Diego Luna (Carlos).
Schnabel’s greatest achievement lies in his ability to visually convey the poetic beauty of Arenas’ work in the midst of a wild world. In this context, it is astonishing to view and understand Arenas’ aim to disseminate his intellectual work under censorship.
