Health Department Offers Bivalent Covid-19 Booster Doses for Children Ages 5 Through 11 Years Old

SHELBY COUNTY, TN (SCHD) — Shelby County Health Department is now providing the recently-approved bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccines to children as young as 5 years old, if they meet the qualifications for a booster dose.
The updated booster vaccine can only be given to children who have, at a minimum, completed the initial two dose series of either Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at least two months ago. The new Moderna booster is authorized for children aged 6 to 17 years old, as well as adults. The Pfizer booster is authorized for children aged 5 to 11 years old and adults. Currently SCHD is providing only the Pfizer bivalent booster for children but expects to offer the Moderna booster as well in the coming weeks.
Both new vaccines trigger immune responses to both the original COVID-19 virus and to the newer Omicron variants currently circulating.

The vaccinations are available at no cost at the following locations on a walk-in basis Monday-Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.: 814 Jefferson Avenue, Suite 207 and 1826 Sycamore View Road.
