Spain on alert for heavy rain, storms

Madrid, Sep 1 (EFE).- Almost all of Spain is to usher in a wet and stormy first few days of September as a low-pressure system moves down from the Atlantic to snap the high summer temperatures.

Spain’s meteorological service Aemet issued orange alerts — the second-highest — for heavy thunderstorms, rain and hail in the Madrid capital region, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Navarre, Murcia and the Valencia region throughout Wednesday afternoon.

Aemet warned that parts of Navarre could see up to 9 centimeters of rainfall in just 12 hours while parts of the Valencia region could get 4cm in one hour.

Flashes of heavy rain on the outskirts of Madrid trapped vehicles in the city of Fuenlabrada on Tuesday evening and caused long tailbacks of traffic during Wednesday morning’s commute. EFE
