Indonesia registers record Covid cases in single day

Jakarta, Jun 21 (EFE).- Indonesia on Monday registered its highest number of Covid-19 infections in a single day since the pandemic began, with 14,536 new cases, as authorities prepare new restrictions in the worst-hit areas.

The Asian country suffered a strong surge of coronavirus infections throughout the past month, which has also caused an increase in deaths up to a total 54,956, some 294 of which were recorded Monday, according to the Health Ministry.

As the situation worsens, the Indonesian government has announced tougher restrictions on movement for the coming two weeks starting Tuesday, as well as a 9pm curfew.

These measures come after the World Health Organization urged Indonesia to bolster its fight against the spread of the virus and to alleviate pressure on hospitals, which have reached over 90% capacity in certain areas.

Indonesia has fully vaccinated 12.3% of its 270 million residents, while 23.2% have received at least a first jab, according to the government.

The country’s vaccination rollout has started its second phase, inoculating healthcare workers, public servants and older people.

Indonesia has vaccine supply agreements with Sinovac, Pfizer, and AstraZeneca for a total 330 million doses. EFE
