Austrian president Van der Bellen seals 2nd term: projection

Vienna, Oct 9 (EFE).- Austria’s incumbent president Alexander Van der Bellen is on track for his second and final six-year term after taking an expected 55.4% of the votes in elections Sunday, according to projections.

The projection from public broadcaster ORF, which has yet to be officially confirmed and has a predicted error margin of two percentile points, means there will be no need for a second round of voting in the Alpine nation.

His closest rival, the right-wing Walter Rosenkranz, fell well short with 18.4%.

The five other candidates landed between 8.4% and 1.6% of the vote.

Nominally independent, Van der Bellen is a former leader of the Green Party, which supports him along with the country’s mainstream parties — directly or indirectly. EFE
