Frost Advisory Tonight into Friday Morning

MEMPHIS, TN (WMCA) — It has been a chilly Thursday and as we move into the overnight, the coldest air for this week will drop into the region. With very dry dewpoints and our air dropping below that mark, we will see the potential for frost to form in parts of the Mid-South.

The National Weather Service out of Memphis has placed West Tennessee, except for Shelby County, and Marshall, Benton, Tippah, and Alcorn counties in North Mississippi under this Frost Advisory.

As we are well into spring and many gardens have been planted, there are several types of plants that should be tended too with the cool temperatures expected. Houseplants, tropical, spring-blooming shrubs, and trees such as azalea, rhododendron, and cherry, along with citrus trees, tender bulbs like dahlia and elephant ears, along with warm-season vegetables like tomato, corn, and pepper and warm-season annuals such as impatiens, petunias, and geranium should be tended to in the frosty conditions.

Tips to protect the tinder vegetation include bringing the plants indoors or watering the plants thoroughly before a freeze to prevent the desiccation and to add an insulation factor to the soil and plant cells. You can protect tinder sprouts by putting an inverted bucket over them that night the frost is expected, cover shrubs and trees with fabric (avoid using plastic).

While our frost chances end on Friday morning, we are staying well below average highs for Friday afternoon. We will warm up by Saturday, but we are also tracking more rain in the forecast as we push into our Sunday and the start of Monday.
