Barça cling to 2nd place with hard-fought win against Sociedad

Sports Desk, Apr 19 (EFE).- Barcelona rebounded from two straight losses with a 1-0 away victory Thursday against Real Sociedad that kept the Blaugrana second in LaLiga, 15 points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Though Sevilla, 3-2 winners Thursday over Levante, are level on points with Barça at 63, the Catalan club are ahead in the table thanks to a better goal difference and have a game in hand.

Sociedad remain in sixth place with 55 points.

After losing to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarterfinal and falling at home to lowly Cadiz, Xavi Hernandez’s men look to have regained their balance.

Seconds after Ousmane Dembele hit the post, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put the visitors up in the 11th minute with his ninth goal in 11 games for Barça since coming over from Arsenal on a free transfer.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen denied Alexander Sorloth off a corner on Sociedad’s first threat, which came in the 34th minute, and Alexander Isak wasted a chance to equalize in the 43rd, firing wide of the target.

Sorloth sent a strike over the cross-bar early in the second half before forcing another stop from Ter Stegen as the match approached the hour mark.

The German goalkeeper also did well to thwart Adnan Januzaj in the 68th minute, which proved to be the last serious opportunity for Sociedad in front of their supporters at Reale Arena in San Sebastian. EFE
