Barcelona agree on terms with Memphis Depay

Barcelona, Jun 19 (EFE).- FC Barcelona announced Saturday the successful conclusion of negotiations to bring Dutch striker Memphis Depay to the LaLiga side on a free transfer.

The Netherlands international will sign with Barça for two years following the expiration of his contract with Olympique Lyonnais, the Spanish club said in a statement.

The move will see Depay reunited with Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman, who directed the 27-year-old forward during his time as coach of the Dutch national team.

Depay is expected to fill the spot occupied for the last 18 months by Martin Braithwaite. Barça have signaled they plan to move the Dane this summer.

While playing for PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch top-flight, Depay attracted the attention of Manchester United, but he never found his stride at Old Trafford and joined Lyon in January 2017.

He helped the Ligue 1 team reach the Champions League semifinals and the final of Coupe de France, where Lyon lost on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain.

Depay was second in scoring in Ligue 1 last season with 20 goals and he also picked up 12 assists.

Koeman was in the stands Thursday at Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam to watch Depay convert a penalty and set up another goal in a 2-0 win against Austria that secured the Netherlands a berth in the knockout stage of Euro 2020.

The Dutch striker is Barcelona’s fourth acquisition so far in the summer transfer window, joining Sergio Agüero and Eric Garcia – both from Manchester City – and Emerson from Real Betis. EFE
