India unveils its 2023 G20 presidency roadmap

New Delhi, Sep 13 (EFE).- India will host more than 200 G20 meetings when it assumes the annual presidency of the group of industrialized and emerging economies next year.

The series of events will lead to the summit of heads of state in New Delhi on Sep.9 and 10, 2023.

“Under its presidency, India is expected to host over 200 G20 meetings across the country, beginning December 2022,” an external affairs ministry statement said on Tuesday.

Indonesia and Brazil will be part of the G20 “troika,” which includes the country that holds the presidency, the predecessor, and the successor.

“This would be the first time when the troika would consist of three developing countries and emerging economies, providing them a greater voice,” the statement said.

The ministry noted that while India’s G20 priorities “are in the process of being firmed up,” they would revolve around inclusive, equitable, and sustainable growth, women empowerment, digital public infrastructure, and tech-enabled development in health, agriculture, and education.

The G20, or Group of Twenty, is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s major developed and developing economies.

It comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the UK, and the US) and the European Union (EU).

The G20 accounts for 85 percent of global GDP, 75 percent of international trade, and two-thirds of the world population, making it the premier forum for international economic cooperation.

India, as G20 Presidency, will invite Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain, and the UAE as guest countries.

India will invite organizations such as the International Solar Alliance (ISA), which it co-founded with France in 2015, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The G20 will hold its upcoming summit in Bali in November, attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

If he does, it will be the first time Putin shares the dais with leaders from the United States and Europe, who have criticized the Russian invasion of Ukraine and imposed sanctions against Moscow. EFE
