At least 5 dead in Honduran maximum security prison fight

Tegucigalpa, Jun 17 (EFE).- At least five people were killed and another 39 injured during a brawl Thursday in a maximum security prison in eastern Honduras, the president of the Association of Relatives of the Deprived of Liberty, Delma Ordonez, reported.

“There are 39 people injured, 15 of them were transferred to the Hospital Escuela, in Tegucigalpa, and there are five confirmed deaths in the prison,” Ordóñez told reporters.

The fight took place between inmates of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18 gangs in the La Tolva prison, Morocelí municipality of El Paraíso department, she said.

So far, the National Penitentiary Institute (INP) of Honduras has not reported on what happened.

Local media began to report the brawl around 8 am local time (14:00 GMT).

Television newscasts have broadcast images showing armed members of the security forces mobilizing inside the jail, in which shots were also heard.

The National Commissioner for Human Rights said that the deaths and attacks reported in La Tolva show lack of implementation of a proper prison administration and urged the Honduran authorities to guarantee the right to personal, mental and moral integrity and the human right to life of persons deprived of liberty.

La Tolva is one of the two maximum security prisons in Honduras in which violent events with tragic results are recorded with some frequency.

In October 2019, two inmates were murdered in different prisons and videos of both events soon emerged.

The first was murdered in La Tolva prison and the second in El Pozo I, in Ilama, Santa Bárbara, taking to five those who lost their lives violently in 2019 in those two prisons.

Four other inmates were previously murdered in La Tolva, two in June 2017 and two in September 2018; and two more in El Pozo in October 2018. EFE
