South Africa approves Sinovac’s Covid vaccine amid record daily rise

Johannesburg, Jul 3 (EFE).- South Africa on Saturday approved the emergency use of the Chinese Sinovac’s Coronavac vaccine amid a third wave of infections that hit a new record driven by the Delta variant.

A total of 24,270 new infections were reported on Friday the highest daily increase since the pandemic in the African country, where the cases have already exceeded 2 million, while the death toll stands at 61,332 the authorities announced last night.

The Gauteng province, where Johannesburg and Pretoria are located, accounts for most of the cases that are pushing hospitals in a critical situation.

The South African authorities authorized the Coronavac vaccine in a bid to speed up the inoculation rollout that had administered jabs developed by Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer. EFE
