2 dead as powerful aftershock rocks parts of Mexico

(Update 1: Adds detail)

Mexico City, Sep 22 (EFE).- At least two people died in Mexico City as parts of the country were rocked by a powerful aftershock Thursday just days after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake shuddered the nation.

The aftershock registered a strength of 6.9 and injured at least three others in the state of Michoacán, according to president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Monday’s quake, which ominously struck just an hour after a drill held to commemorate the anniversary of the devastating temblors of 1985 and 2017, also killed at least two people.

According to the National Seismological Service, Thursday’s earthquake happened at 1:16 (6:16 GMT) and the epicenter was about 81 kilometers south of Coalcoman, Michoacan — the same area as Monday.

“In the rest of the country, there is minor material damage,” the president said in his morning address.

More than a thousand aftershocks have been registered since Monday’s initial quake, this last one has been the strongest.

The events have rocked Mexico, stirring memories of the 1985 and 2017 quakes, which claimed 20,000 and 370 lives respectively. EFE
