Tottenham beat Everton to keep pace with Premier League leaders

Sports Desk, Oct 15 (EFE).- Tottenham Hotspur boosted their aspirations to contend for the Premier League title with a 2-0 win Saturday over Everton.

Level on points with second-place Manchester City at 23, Spurs trail leaders Arsenal by just a point, though both the defending champions and the Gunners each have a game in hand.

The hosts dominated possession in front of 80,000 people at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, yet Everton generated more scoring chances in the first half and Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford dealt easily with a Harry Kane that was the only shot on target in the opening 45 minutes.

Pickford made a great save in the 53rd minute to deny Kane again, but the striker would break the deadlock six minutes later from the penalty spot after drawing a foul from the keeper.

It was Kane’s ninth goal of the Premier League campaign and only another good stop by Pickford prevented the England captain from completing a brace.

The Everton keeper could no nothing about a deflected strike from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg that made it 2-0 for Spurs in the 86th minute.

Everton, who failed to put a shot on target, are 14th in the table with 10 points.

Former Toffee Richarlison, acquired by Tottenham in the summer transfer window, left the game with an injury in the 52nd minute.

“We don’t know, we hope it is not so serious. He felt a problem in his calf,” Spurs coach Antonio Conte said of Richarlison after the match.

In other Premier League action, second-from-bottom Leicester City were held 0-0 at home by Crystal Palace, Wolverhampton rebounded from two straight losses to beat last-place Nottingham Forest 1-0, and Fulham came from behind to draw 2-2 with Bournemouth. EFE id/dr
