Berlusconi spends night in hospital, receives visit from relatives

Rome, Apr 6 (EFE).- Three-time Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi spent the night under intensive care at a Milan hospital with a medical report on his condition expected Thursday.

, while this Wednesday he received a visit from his brother Paolo and his children.

Berlusconi, 86, was initially hospitalized due to heart problems and later pneumonia, but local newspaper Corriere della Sera reported Thursday that the leader of Forza Italia suffers from leukemia, although this information could not be independently verified.

“He is stable, he is a rock. His mood? Ours is good. He will also get out of this,” his brother Paolo said after visiting him Wednesday at the San Raffaele Hospital.

He was at the general and cardiothoracic intensive care unit run by Professor Alberto Zangrillo, his personal doctor for years and who may issue a medical report Thursday, though his family has maintained the privacy of Berlusconi’s health, according to some media.

“He is in intensive care because a previous problem related to an infection had not been resolved. But he speaks and is awake,” said Antonio Tajani, Forza Italia’s national coordinator.

His partner, fellow party parliamentarian Marta Fascina, accompanied him to the hospital and remained there throughout. His five children and Licia Ronzulli, Forza Italia spokesperson in the Senate, arrived Wednesday afternoon.

Political leaders posted messages of encouragement on social media.

“Forza Silvio”, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on her platforms.

“Forza Silvio, Italy awaits you,” Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini wrote. He also received messages from opposition figures such as Matteo Renzi, Carlo Calenda and Francesco Boccia, who wished him a quick recovery.

Berlusconi was already hospitalized from Monday to undergo medical checks, according to officials.

Berlusconi, whose formation is currently part of the ruling coalition led by far-right Prime Minister Meloni, has worn a pacemaker since 2006 and suffers from health problems.

In 2020 he was admitted to hospital with coronavirus and bilateral pneumonia, although he was discharged a few days later. He has since repeatedly visited the hospital.

The last one, also at the San Raffaele hospital, was in January 2022 due to a urinary tract infection. EFE
