Palestinian killed after stabbing Israeli policeman in Jerusalem

Jerusalem, Nov 3 (EFE).- A Palestinian was killed by Israeli security forces after he allegedly stabbed a police officer in Jerusalem, officials said Thursday, amid heightened tensions in the region following a spate of deadly attacks in recent weeks.

The suspect entered the Muslim Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem from Damascus Gate and “pulled out a knife and stabbed one of the officers in his upper body” when he was stopped for questioning, police said.

Two other officers opened fire at the alleged assailant who was later declared dead at the scene, police added.

Two members of the security forces were injured during the shootout, according to police.

Israel’s Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency response service confirmed the attack and said that a 30-year-old man suffering a mild condition due to a stab wound and a 25-year-old with a limb injury were transferred to hospital.

The third victim was treated at the scene, which was cordoned off by the police for investigations.

The alleged attacker was identified as 20-year-old Bader Amer, a resident of Beit Hanina neighborhood in East Jerusalem.

The stabbing comes after another Palestinian was shot dead during clashes on Thursday with Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank.

Dawood Khalil, 42, died of gunshot wounds to the heart in the town of Beit Duqqu, the Palestinian health ministry said.

A Palestinian died Wednesday after he rammed a vehicle into an officer and attacked him with an axe, while another Palestinian was killed on Sunday after allegedly ramming a car into a group of Israeli soldiers that left five of them wounded in the West Bank.

Some 139 Palestinians and 22 Israelis have been killed in violent incidents so far this year, the deadliest since 2015.EFE
