Messi: the best does not always win the Champions League

Sports Desk, Feb 22 (EFE).- Paris Saint Germain’s star Lionel Messi said that “the best does not always win” the Champions League, during an interview published by the Ligue 1 club on Tuesday.

The Argentine stressed the difficulty of winning the title his club fight to clinch for the first time in their history. They grabbed a 1-0 first-leg lead over Real Madrid in the round of 16.

“Winning the Champions is complicated. Because it is a competition where the best are playing, because any detail, any mistake can knock you out, competing against such great clubs and teams,” he said.

“I think we have the team to try to win. I think we are very excited and we are eager to achieve it, but we have to be calm, because as I say it is difficult to win the Champions League.

“The best team doesn’t always win and you have to be aware of all the details and make a great team because in the end, the strong teams are the ones that achieve their goals,” he said.

He also addressed his on-field relation with some of his teammates, namely Neymar, Ángel Di María and Kylian Mbappé.

“Well, I already know Di Maria and Ney from the national team and Ney in the past at Barcelona we played together.

“Kylian I did not know him on or off the field. And well, little by little we are getting to know each other much better and above all getting to know each other on the field to see how we comfortable we feel with each other.

“And obviously it is very nice to be on the field with the best. I was lucky enough to do it for a long time at Barcelona (…) and now it is my turn to do it at Paris as well. So I am happy,” he added. EFE
