Israeli forces kill another Palestinian in occupied West Bank

Jerusalem, Sep 7 (EFE).- A Palestinian was shot dead during an Israeli military raid in the West Bank town of Nablus, bringing to six the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in less than a week, official sources said Wednesday.

“Younes Ghassan Tayeh, 21, was killed after Israeli forces directly shot him in the heart in the Fara’a camp in Tubas governorate,” in the northeastern part of the West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry wrote in a Facebook post.

The Israeli army confirmed it had carried out the raid, saying a firefight broke out with militiamen after they threw “explosive devices” at soldiers.

According to the Palestinian Wafa news agency, Israeli soldiers fired tear gas and sound bombs, arrested two Palestinians, and raided the house of a released prisoner.

A total of 25 Palestinians were detained and weapons were confiscated amid other raids in several West Bank towns on Wednesday.

In early April, the Israeli army launched the operation “Break the Wave” in the occupied West Bank in response to five attacks perpetrated by Palestinians on Israeli territory, in which 18 people were killed.

Since then, more than 90 Palestinians have died and 1,500 others arrested amid operations that have mainly taken place in Nablus and Jenin, according to Palestinian official figures.

On Tuesday, Mohamed Sabaaneh, 29, was killed and 20 others wounded during an Israeli raid in the West Bank to demolish the family home of Raed Hazem, accused of killing three Israelis in April.

The day before, 19-year-old Taher Zakarneh was shot dead by Israeli gunfire in the village of Qabatiya in Jenin.

Another Palestinian was killed by Israeli troops on September 2 after attempting to stab a soldier in Hebron.

Yazan Afana, 26, and Samer Khaled, 25, succumbed to their wounds after Israeli troops shot them during clashes in al-Bireh town and Balata refugee camp, respectively.

Among the Palestinians killed were armed militiamen who responded with violence to Israeli raids in the West Bank, but there were also unarmed civilians, minors and journalists, such as Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh.

In recent weeks, Palestinian attacks against Israeli soldiers and settlers have intensified, and Israeli security sources have stressed the need to reinforce security in the area. EFE
