Pair of Michael Jordan sneakers sell for $2.2 mn at auction

New York, Apr 11 (EFE).- A pair of sneakers worn by basketball great Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals went for a record $2.2 million (2 million euros) at auction Tuesday, Sotheby’s said.

The Air Jordan 13 shoes are from Jordan’s final season with the Chicago Bulls, known as “the Last Dance,” which ended with the team’s sixth NBA championship of the Jordan era.

MJ worn the pair during Game 2 of the finals, when he scored 37 points in 40 minutes to lead the Bulls 93-88 over the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City.

After the game, he autographed the shoes and gave them to a Jazz ball boy who was in charge of maintaining the visitors’ locker room.

“Today’s record-breaking result further proves that the demand for Michael Jordan sports memorabilia continues to outperform and transcend all expectations,” Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectibles, Brahm Wachter, said.

The auction house had predicted the Air Jordan 13s would go for anywhere from $2 million to $4 million.

Last year, a game-worn jersey from Jordan’s final season fetched $10.1 million at a Sotheby’s auction, a record for any item of sports memorabilia.

Sotheby’s said that interest in Jordan has been heightened by the release of the film “Air,” Hollywood’s take on the beginnings of the collaboration between Nike and the future superstar. EFE nqs/dr
