Three killed in attack on Indian army camp in Kashmir

Srinagar, India, Aug 11 (EFE).- At least three people were killed and two injured when rebels stormed an army camp in Indian-administered Kashmir on Thursday, according to official Indian sources.

The attack occurred at dawn when militants “tried to cross the fence of the army camp” in the Pargal area of Rajouri district, Jammu Division Deputy Police Director General Mukesh Singh told reporters.

“The sentry challenged them and an exchange of fire took place,” the officer continued.

Singh added that backup had been deployed to the army camp to secure the area.

A district official told Efe, on condition of anonymity, that five soldiers were injured in the attack but that three of them later died after being transferred to a nearby health center, while two others were being treated for their wounds.

He added that the bodies of two of the attackers had been retrieved.

The attack came hours after police reported the deaths of three militants on Wednesday night in the Budgam district in central Kashmir.

While attacks of this type are not common in the Jammu region, there has been an uptick in violent incidents in recent months.

India and Pakistan both claim full sovereignty over the Kashmir region since the subcontinent’s partition in 1947 when it gained independence from the British empire.

The disputed territory is divided between the two countries by means of a de-facto border, the Line of Control, and New Delhi has repeatedly accused Islamabad of backing cross-border terrorist activity.

A separatist insurgency has raged since the 1990s in one of the world’s most heavily militarized regions.

Pakistan has denied the allegations and accused India of human rights abuses in Kashmir. EFE
