Man U downs Newcastle for Carabao Cup, Tottenham notches 2-0 win over Chelsea

Sports Desk, Feb 26 (EFE).- Tottenham Hotspur dealt Chelsea a 2-0 home turf win before 61,600 fans in London on Sunday on a goal from Oliver Skipp just after the break and a late tally by Harry Kane.

It was Chelsea’s sixth consecutive match without a win, and the side has only been in the W column once in its last 11 outings.

The first half was lackluster, with little in the way of excitement until just seconds before the intermission, when Hakim Ziyech was shown a red card after apparently hitting Emerson Royal in the face, although after reviewing video of the incident the official issued a yellow card instead.

Skipp was on the scene just seconds into second half play to get the Spurs on the board, with Royal trying for a goal against netminder Kepa, who saved only to have Enzo Fernandez try to clear the ball directly toward Skipp just outside the area whereupon he struck hard, with Kepa getting a hand on it but it ricocheted into the net off the crossbar.

Chelsea’s Kai Havertz had a chance midway into the second half to get an equalizer but the attempt was denied by Fraser Forster, in the Tottenham net, and then Kane cemented the win in the 82nd minute after Eric Dier’s knocked a header to him.

With the win, Tottenham moved more solidly into the top four, five points ahead of fifth place Newcastle, while Chelsea remains in the No. 10 spot.

Meanwhile, Manchester United downed Newcastle United before 87,000 fans at Wembley Stadium, taking home the Carabao Cup, their first trophy in six years.

Casemiro opened the scoring with a header off Luke Shaw’s free kick in the 33rd minute, and then just six minutes later Marcus Rashford fired one that bounced off defender Sven Botman and went into the twine past Loris Karius, the Newcastle netminder, for the 2-0.

The Red Devils suffocated the Newcastle attack during the second half and the Magpies posed little threat to the lead for the duration, although Karius made seven great saves during the match.

It was Man United’s sixth League Cup, putting the team into the No. 3 spot for tourney titles, behind Liverpool, with nine, and Manchester City with eight, and it was manager Erik ten Hag’s first trophy at the helm of the team, having turned things around for the squad since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.
