EU agrees on stepping up Ukraine support as MSC ends

Munich, Germany, Feb 19 (EFE).- The Munich Security Conference (MSC) came to an end on Sunday with debates dominated by the war in Ukraine and the future of the international order.

“We will support Ukraine for as long as it takes” and “Ukraine must win the war” were some of the most repeated phrases during the three-day conference.

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said Sunday that it was time to match deeds with words.

“Here we said, as all European leaders said here yesterday, that Russia cannot win this war, that Ukraine has to prevail,” Borrell said, referring to speeches by French president Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“Then let’s go from words to facts and accelerate our military support to Ukraine, because Ukraine is in a critical situation from the point of view from available ammunition,” the Spanish politician added.

But among the short-term challenges is implementing the decisions that have been taken such as sending Ukraine battle tanks and more ammunition, while also increasing production in Europe.

Estonian prime minister Kaja Kallas, meanwhile, warned the war is expected to be dragged out as Russian president Vladimir Putin is betting on the West’s support of Ukraine fading over time.

Kallas rebuked those, especially in Western Europe, who have criticized arms shipments for fear of a nuclear escalation in Ukraine.

“We must break the cycle of Russian aggression,” she said.

“If we fall for Russia’s nuclear threats, we’ll wake up in a much more dangerous world.

“It’s the same trap, every next time they come back bolder. Ukraine and Russia’s neighbors aren’t afraid, neither should those further away.”EFE
