MANIFESTANTES EXIGEN QUE EL GOBIERNO DEJE DE SEPARAR NIÑOS INMIGRANTES DE SUS FAMILIAS

PROTESTORS DEMAND THAT THE GOVERNMENT STOP SEPARATING IMMIGRANT CHILDREN FROM THEIR FAMILIES

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/Action Network) — Ex solicitantes de asilo, defensores, académicos y líderes religiosos se reunirán el viernes, 1 de junio, en Civic Center Plaza para pedir el fin de la política de la Administración Trump de separar a los niños inmigrantes de sus madres en la frontera sur.

Manifestantes están tomando medidas como parte de un Día Nacional de Acción para Niños patrocinado por la Alianza Nacional de Trabajadoras Domésticas, We Belong Together, ACLU, United We Dream, MomsRising, MoveOn, y la Comisión de Mujeres Refugiadas.

Múltiples concentraciones, manifestaciones y vigilias se llevarán a cabo simultáneamente en ciudades de todo el país, incluidas Washington, DC, Chicago, Seattle, Minneapolis y San Antonio, para llamar la atención sobre este error judicial.

“La administración Trump está abusando de los niños pequeños separándolos de sus madres solicitantes de asilo en la frontera con Estados Unidos, y estamos instando al gobierno a poner fin a esta práctica”, dijo la abogada de inmigración de Memphis y presidenta del Comité AILA Pro Bono, Sheila Starkey Hahn, quien ha visitado los centros de detención en Artesia, Nuevo México y Dilley y Karnes, Texas. “A través de esta demostración, estamos expresando que no nos quedaremos de brazos cruzados mientras esta administración separe a los niños inmigrantes de sus familias”.

MEMPHIS, TN (Action Network) — Formerly detained asylum seekers, advocates, academics, and faith leaders will gather on June 1 at Civic Center Plaza to call for an end to the Trump Administration’s policy of separating immigrant children from their mothers at the southern border.

Protestors are taking action as part of a National Day of Action for Children sponsored by the National Domestic Workers Alliance, We Belong Together, ACLU, United We Dream, MomsRising, MoveOn, and the Women’s Refugee Commission.

Rallies, demonstrations and vigils will take place concurrently in cities across the country, including Washington, D.C., Chicago, Seattle, Minneapolis, and San Antonio, to bring attention to this miscarriage of justice.

Organized by The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) Mid-South Chapter, Latino Memphis, Midsouth Immigration Advocates, and the Community Legal Center, Memphis’ event serves to appeal to the Administration’s sense of humanity and justice to stop the separation of children from their parents.

Lee Gelernt of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project said Tuesday that “Children are begging and screaming not to be separated from their parents, as they’re hauled off to different cities. It’s a harrowing situation, one that the president himself called horrible. No law even remotely requires the separation of children, and we filed a recent lawsuit arguing, in fact, that the Constitution prohibits this policy.”

“The Trump Administration is abusing small children by separating them from their asylum seeking mothers at the US border, and we are urging the government to end this practice,” said Memphis immigration attorney and AILA Pro Bono Committee Chair Sheila Starkey Hahn, who has visited detention centers in Artesia, New Mexico and Dilley and Karnes, Texas. “Through this demonstration, we are expressing that we will not sit idly by while this administration separates immigrant children from their families.”
