EFE photojournalist awarded in Walter Reuter German Prize for Journalism

Mexico City, Nov 25 (EFE).- Mexican photojournalist Sashenka Gutiérrez, of EFE news agency, was awarded third place in the photography and cartoons category of the prestigious Walter Reuter German Prize for Journalism in Mexico City on Thursday.

The powerful image titled “Fuimos Todas” (It was all of us) for which Gutiérrez won the award was taken in the capital on Aug. 16 at the iconic Angel of Independence monument on Reforma avenue, and shows a confrontation between two women – a protester and a police officer.

In an interview, Gutierrez said that the photograph was captured “during a women’s protest that was surrounded by the police and during this time a clash occurred. Some of the demonstrators set fire to aerosol cans and one of them was brought close to the face of one of the officials.”

That demonstration was held to commemorate two years of the #NoNosCuidanNosViolan march that took place on Aug. 16, 2019, in which thousands of women protested against sexual abuse by police officials in the capital and ended with protesters vandalizing the Angel of Independence monument with graffiti.

Andrea Alejandra Murcia won first place for her photograph “Bárbara 8M” published by Cuartoscuro agency, and second place went to Salvador Cisneros for his photograph “Cicatrices de la violencia” (Scars of violence) published in the El Universal newspaper.

The 15th edition of the prize was dedicated to “Gender Violence and Feminist Movements” with the aim of giving visibility and impetus to this process of social transformation, and awarded on Nov. 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The award is for Mexican and Latin American journalists who publish in Mexican media.

According to the award, works that contributed to revealing the different forms of gender violence were assessed, as well as those that analyzed the role of the State in this situation, those that documented the experiences and demands of feminist movements, and those that contributed to critical reflection on the situation in the country in relation to gender violence.
