“Bluff City Law” Features Memphis and Focuses on Civil Rights

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Muy pronto, distintas partes de la ciudad de Memphis podrán ser vistas en la nueva serie de NBC, “Bluff City Law”, la cual cuenta con un elenco maravilloso y completamente diverso. Para celebrar un hecho tan importante, La Prensa Latina tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a uno de los productores ejecutivos, así como a algunos de los protagonistas del show, como el gran actor Jimmy Smits y la actriz Caitlin McGee.

Según David Janollari, quien comparte créditos con Dean Georgaris y Michael Aguilar como productor ejecutivo, se eligió filmar la serie en Memphis por su historia en relación a los derechos civiles y el activismo, además de que nunca -o casi nunca- se ha grabado un show de este tipo en el sur del país.

“En realidad queríamos hacer el show en un lugar que no fuera Nueva York, Los Ángeles o Chicago, y que no se viera como cualquier otro programa de televisión (sobre leyes, bufetes de abogados, demandas y casos criminales o hasta de inmigración); y estábamos realmente fascinados con el sur del país, como creo que nuestra audiencia también lo estará”, dijo Janollari. “Por mucho tiempo, la región del sur no ha sido muy representada en la televisión, y menos en una serie como ésta”, agregó.

Además, la combinación de la historia de la música en Memphis con la historia del Movimiento de los Derechos Civiles, junto con la historia de la ciudad y “su vitalidad”, como mencionó Janollari, es lo que probablemente hará que la gente vea el show. “Será muy diferente ahora, ya que cuando la gente esté buscando qué ver en la televisión, probablemente se detendrá y mirará dos veces”, aseveró el galardonado productor ejecutivo. “También sentimos que Memphis sería una locación excelente. Ésta es una ciudad muy cálida, acogedora y hospitalaria; nosotros nos sentimos como en casa, y parte de eso es que todos aquí realmente hacen hasta lo imposible por hacernos sentir como en casa. Desde los conductores de Uber hasta los funcionarios del gobierno, y todos en general, nos dicen que ‘queremos que estén aquí, los queremos aquí’, y nosotros estamos tratando de capturar ese espíritu de la gente de Memphis en la serie, y ​​con suerte lo haremos”.

Por el lado de Jimmy Smits, el actor que anteriormente ha participado en otras series de televisión sobre drama judicial y otra variedad de conflictos (L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, The West Wing, etc.), él comenta que su personaje en “Bluff City Law” es un hombre sincero, centrado, práctico y firme que tiene mucha energía.

Continuando con la entrevista, y por sus raíces latinas, se le preguntó a Smits sobre la posibilidad de incluir a otros personajes que representen a hispanos en el show, a lo que él respondió que “definitivamente” sí.

“No se pueden hacer historias y hablar sobre el Medio Sur en este momento y no tratar el hecho de lo que está sucediendo en Mississippi con ICE e inmigración (lo cual está afectando a muchas familias hispanas). Como un pequeño bufete de abogados, que se ocupa de los problemas de impacto social, no hay forma de que no podamos abordar esos problemas”, expresó el ganador de múltiples premios y nominaciones (Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG y ALMA).

De acuerdo con su declaración, Smits está muy contento de ser parte de un elenco tan diverso y profesional.

En el caso de Caitlin McGee, la joven y brillante actriz indicó que le encanta ser parte de “Bluff City Law”, ya que para ella es muy importante representar todos y cada uno de los ámbitos de la vida, específicamente cuando se trata de los derechos civiles, los afroamericanos, los inmigrantes y la comunidad LGBTQ.

“Si nuestra serie de televisión representa a las personas que hoy día forman parte de los titulares (en los medios de comunicación) como seres humanos reales que son, y logramos que el mensaje llegue al público, entonces eso sería más de lo que yo pueda pedir como actriz; porque estamos bloqueando la empatía en este momento, en este mundo en que vivimos, y yo desearía que tuviéramos más empatía por los demás… A veces tengo que apartarme un poco de la realidad viendo reality shows o cualquier otro programa de TV, para no halarme por los pelos y gritar por qué hay niños encerrados en jaulas. Es realmente difícil actuar como un verdadero ser humano en este mundo, en este país, en este momento, y creo que, no sólo como actriz, sino como una mujer blanca, tengo que usar mi privilegio para hablar en nombre de aquellas personas que no tienen los mismos privilegios que yo”, dijo McGee, agregando a su vez que el hecho de que Sydney Strait haga lo mismo y piense igual que ella simplemente facilita su desempeño actoral en el show. “Eso es muy importante para mí, ya que estaremos hablando de historias de muchas personas”.

Así como Jimmy Smits y Caitlin McGee, el resto de los actores que conforman el elenco de “Bluff City Law” -Barry Sloane, como Jake Reilly; Jayne Atkinson, como Della Bedford; Michael Luwoye, como Anthony Little; MaameYaa Boafo, como Briana Johnson; y Stony Blyden, como Emerson- piensa que el show es bastante prometedor, no sólo porque se está filmando en Memphis, sino porque ofrece una variedad de temas que tienen mucho que ver con la actualidad.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Very soon, different parts of the city of Memphis will be seen on TV, in the new NBC series, “Bluff City Law,” which has a wonderful and completely diverse cast. To celebrate such an important event, La Prensa Latina had the opportunity to interview one of the executive producers, as well as some of the starring actors like Jimmy Smits and Caitlin McGee.

According to David Janollari, who shares credits with Dean Georgaris and Michael Aguilar as executive producer, they chose to film the series in Memphis because of its history with the Civil Rights Movement and activism, not to mention the fact that the South has never – or hardly ever – been represented in a TV show like this.

“We really wanted to set the show in a location that didn’t look like every other show on TV (New York, Los Angeles or Chicago), and we were really fascinated with the South as I believe our audience is,” Janollari said. “The South has not been that represented on television in a real deep dive kind of way in a long time,” he added.

Furthermore, the combination of the history of music in Memphis with the history of the Civil Rights Movement, along with the history of the city itself and “its kind of vibrancy,” like Janollari mentioned, is what would probably make people watch the show. “This would be very really different when people are looking for things to watch on TV; they’ll probably stop and look twice,” the award winner executive producer stated. “We kind of felt that this would be a great location. This is such a warm, inviting and hospitable city; we feel at home here, and part of it is that everybody really went out of their way to make us feel at home. From the Uber drivers to the government officials and everybody in between was like ‘we want you here, we love you here,’ and we are trying to actually capture that spirit of the people of Memphis in the show, and hopefully we will.”

On the other hand, Jimmy Smits, the actor who has previously participated in other television series on legal drama and other social issues (L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, The West Wing, etc.), commented that the role that he plays in “Bluff City Law” is about a man who is centered and grounded, with a lot of energy.

Continuing with the interview, and due to his Latin roots, Smits was asked about the possibility of including other characters representing Hispanics in the show. He replied that it was something that would “definitely” happen.

“You can’t do stories and talk about the Mid-South right now and not deal with what is going on in Mississippi with ICE and immigration (which is affecting many Hispanic families). As a small firm that deals with social impact issues, there is no way that we cannot address those issues,” expressed the recipient of multiple awards and nominations (Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG and ALMA).

In addition to this, Smits says that he is very happy to be part of such a diverse and professional cast.

In the case of Caitlin McGee, the young and brilliant actress indicated that she loves being part of “Bluff City Law”, as it is very important to her to represent every single walk of life, specifically when it comes to civil rights, African Americans, immigrants and the LGBTQ community.

“If our show gets to represent the people that are part of the headlines as a real human person, and that sticks to someone, then that is beyond anything of what I care about as an actor, because we are blocking empathy at the moment in this world, and I wish we had more of it. I feel very strongly in the same way that she (Sydney) feels very strongly. I have to separate myself at times by watching reality TV or some garbage, so that I don’t rip my head out and scream why are there children in cages… It’s a really hard thing to be a human being in this world, in this country right now, and I think especially as not just an actress but a white woman that I have to use my privilege to speak out for those people that do not have the same privileges that I do,” Caitlin said, stating at the same time that the fact that Sydney does the same thing as her just makes her job easier. “This is so important to me in the long run, talking about the human stories behind all of this.”

As well as Jimmy Smits and Caitlin McGee, the rest of the actors that make up the cast of “Bluff City Law” – Barry Sloane, as Jake Reilly; Jayne Atkinson, as Della Bedford; Michael Luwoye, as Anthony Little; MaameYaa Boafo, as Briana Johnson; and Stony Blyden, as Emerson – thinks the show is quite promising, not only because it is being filmed in Memphis, but because it offers a wide variety of topics that have a lot to do with today’s world.

Coming from a famous Memphis family known for taking on injustice, brilliant lawyer Sydney Strait used to work at her father Elijah’s celebrated law firm until their tumultuous relationship got in the way. In the wake of her loss, hoping to reconnect with the daughter he loves, Elijah asks Sydney to rejoin his firm. She agrees because despite her lingering resentment and distrust, she knows that working alongside her father is her best hope at changing the world … if they can ever get along.

“Bluff City Law,” the new NBC show, will have its grand premiere on Monday, September 23, at 9 p.m.
