Two-thirds of over 3 million Ukrainian refugees in Poland, UN

Geneva, Mar 17 (EFE).- Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has forced 3.16 million people to flee the country since the war began last month, the United Nations Refugee Agency reported Thursday.

Almost two-thirds of the refugees, 1.9 million, have fled to neighboring Poland, which has put a lot of pressure on the country’s public resources and prompted the private sector to step in to alleviate the pressure.

The UN agency said over 282,000 of the refugees have crossed into Hungary, 228,000 into Slovakia and 168,000 into Russia while Romania and Moldova have also received tens of thousands of refugees.

Meanwhile, two million people have been internally displaced in Ukraine and this figure could reach up to six million, according to UN projections.

The Ukrainian refugee crisis is the worst in Europe since World War II, surpassing some 2.4 million refugees who fled the wars in former Yugoslavia during the 90s. EFE
